There is still a little weeding and cleaning up to do, but all of the major pieces are in place. The goldfish from last year all made it through the winter split between a fish tank in the dining room and a stock tank in the garage. I built some fish hides last month and got them moved in. This week the pond plants showed up. It has really come together from that nasty hole from the failed liner.
Fish
There are around 20 goldfish from last year, and last week I went to Hoshi Koi in Puyallup to pick them up a few friends. I bought a pair of Koi (Ki Matsuba Koi and Kohaku Koi) and 5 Shabukin goldfish to join them. With the pond plants and a little more hide space covered in plants, they seem really happy. Feeding time is one of my favorite parts of the day.

Pond Plants
This week I started at Todd’s Nursery in Orting, WA. I picked up a few pond plants: Queen of Whites Waterlily, Myra Waterlily, Calla Lily, Dwarf Umbrella Palm and Variegated Society Garlic. In addition to the potted plants, I added a dozen Water Hyacinth and a few Water Lettuce. Last year’s pond plants were mostly a success until the liner failed. The issues we had were not with growing them, it was with racoons shredding them wading in the shallow pond. This one is much deeper, so that should not be an issue. Last year’s pond plants were pretty late in the season, so it will be interesting to see how much the Hyacinth and water Lettuce expand.

That’s a wrap, now it’s just time to maintain and enjoy.
