This one took a bit of planning to figure out the best way to go about it. Graham’s soil is full of rocks. I knew I wasn’t going to dig 50 holes with a shovel. I also knew that the Ryobi auger I have struggles with the potato size rocks all over. I wanted to make sure I could fill the holes with good soil as well, so that meant big holes.

I decided to rent a Bobcat to dig the holes. I definitely learned a few things about Bobcats. The first is they are VERY unstable on uneven ground. I had a few white knuckle moments where I had to remain calm long enough to move the auger to counter balance or plant myself so I didn’t tip over. The other is I rented it for a day and dug all 50 holes in a little over an hour. The size and power of the auger meant a few seconds to dig the hole. Most of the time was spent repositioning the auger.

This project will take quite a few years to realize, but 50 trees planted today will one day be the great tree wall.
