The folks at Hoshi Koi were nice enough to let us scoop up some tadpoles with our pond plants. They said the fish wouldn’t bother them, but there were no tadpoles the next day, so I decided to try again with a dedicated pond.

I really just want to attract frogs, but I can always stack the deck. I added 6 White Cloud Mountain Minnows and bunch of tadpoles a few weeks ago. I was shocked when I brought the macro lens out to photograph some tadpoles and saw minnow fry swimming around.

There are several generations of minnows swimming around now. The odd thing is I rarely ever see the minnows. I bought 20, 6 in the tadpole pond and the rest in the main pond. I can see the main pond minnows schooling any time. I can see minnow fry anytime. I would bet you $50 you can sit there for a half hour and never see an adult minnow.

The pond is just to the left of the main pond and has it’s own small pump, just enough to keep the water moving around. It trickles out of the hose onto a flat rock and back in. I put a LOT of rocks in that pond to make sure there were plenty of hide spots that a raccoon couldn’t easily get to. I’ve seen the raccoon check it out on camera, but he must not see much opportunity because he hasn’t shredded any of the plants looking for anything.

The main pond is where I expect the frogs will live, as well as where adult minnows can go if the breeding is successful. I can’t tell you how much fun I am having with the pond this year.
